Women's Dress Size Guide: How to Find Your Perfect Fit

The short answer

Measure your bust, waist and hips, then compare them with the chart for the exact dress and size. Check whether the chart describes the wearer or the garment. US, UK and EU labels help you compare names, but do not guarantee fit. There is no automatic size-up or size-down rule for a silhouette or fabric.

A useful size guide should help you make a specific buying decision: whether this dress, in this size, has the shape and room you need. It should not replace one guess with another. Start with the product measurements, then check the construction and the way you want to wear the dress.

For a quick lookup, open the US, UK and EU reference chart and conversion helpers. Use the steps below to decide what that reference means for the dress you are considering.

Take current measurements

Use a soft tape over light clothing or the underlayers you intend to wear. Keep it level, snug and uncompressed. Stand naturally rather than holding your breath or pulling in your waist. A measurement from an old order is less useful than one taken now.

  1. Bust: Measure around the fullest part, with the tape level across your back.
  2. Waist: Measure around your natural waist without pulling the tape tight.
  3. Hips: Stand with feet together and measure the fullest part of your hips and seat.
  4. Dress length: Follow the start point specified by the product chart. A shoulder-to-hem measurement is different from a centre-back measurement.
  5. Other fit points: Check shoulders, upper arms, sleeves and any fitted lining when relevant.

Write down the units with every number. A note saying “bust 40” is ambiguous without inches or centimetres. For more detail, use our measurement instructions.

Know what the product chart measures

Chart type How to compare
Body measurements Compare your bust, waist and hips directly with the ranges intended for the wearer.
Garment measurements Compare with a well-fitting similar garment measured at the same points. Account for the room and coverage you want.
Flat width Double only when the chart explicitly gives a flat width and you need its corresponding circumference. A 52 cm flat chest width is a 104 cm garment circumference, not a recommended 104 cm body measurement.
Unclear or missing information Ask us to clarify the method, units and size-specific measurements before choosing.

Do not turn a generic letter-size table into a Vilmere-wide body-size chart. Different dresses can have different proportions, construction and grading. A size M in one design may not have the same garment dimensions as a size M in another.

Compare silhouettes, then inspect their measurements

A close-fitting dress and a flared dress can both work, but different areas may limit the fit. Check the bust, waist, hips, shoulders and lining wherever the garment sits closely.

When you are between sizes

Compare your current measurements with the chart for the selected dress and size. Check whether the chart gives body or garment measurements, then consider the cut, lining and stated stretch. Do not automatically choose a larger or smaller size based only on a fabric name or silhouette. If neither size meets your needs, ask for the missing measurements or consider another cut.

  • Fitted or bodycon: Check all fitted areas and the lining. Do not choose a smaller size simply to make the dress tighter.
  • A-line or flowing: A loose skirt does not correct a tight bodice, armhole or waistband. The smaller size is not automatically the better choice.
  • Knit or stretch: Check the stated stretch and construction. Do not assume the lining, seams and fastenings stretch like the outer fabric.
  • Structured or non-stretch: Check enough room for sitting, reaching and walking. A larger label may help one area and make another too loose.

If your bust, waist and hips point to different sizes, compare the complete chart. Another cut may fit more comfortably than moving up or down in the same dress. Ask an alterations professional about the actual garment before assuming it can be taken in or let out.

Use international conversions as a reference

Size labels are approximate references, not a fit guarantee. Brands, suppliers and individual styles can use different sizing. The selected product’s own measurements take priority. This reference does not mean every Vilmere dress is offered in every listed size.

For example, the reference chart pairs US 8 with UK 12 and EU 40. That example compares labels only. It does not establish a bust measurement, guarantee a supplier’s equivalent, or tell you which Vilmere dress size to order. Use the full size reference alongside the product chart.

To convert units, multiply inches by 2.54 or divide centimetres by 2.54. For example, 36 inches equals 91.44 cm. Our measurement converter does the arithmetic without assigning a dress size.

One size, adjustable details and two-piece sets

One size does not mean every size. Check the garment’s actual dimensions and any documented stretch range. A tie waist can change the waist shape, but it cannot guarantee room at the bust, shoulders or upper arms.

For a two-piece set, compare both pieces. A flowing outer abaya can sit over a fitted inner dress. The inner dress still needs to meet your fit and coverage preferences when the outer layer opens.

Check length and movement

Compare garment length using the same measuring points. Height alone cannot tell you exactly where a mini, midi or maxi will finish. Shoes and body proportions also affect the result.

When the dress arrives, follow the return conditions and keep tags attached while assessing it. Try your intended underlayers and shoes. Sit, walk, reach and turn gently. Check whether a lining restricts your stride, a neckline shifts or a hem catches beneath your shoe. Stop if a seam strains or a fastening needs force.

Plan returns before ordering multiple sizes

Before ordering more than one size, read our current return policy, including eligibility and exclusions. It allows 14 days after receipt to request a return and requires approval before sending an item back. The policy does not promise free return shipping. Ask support@vilmere.com to confirm return-shipping arrangements and any costs before relying on that option.

Do not assume a change of size is an instant exchange. Check the current process and leave enough time before an event to receive, assess and, if necessary, reorder a dress.

Frequently asked questions

Do Vilmere dresses always run one size small?

No store-wide adjustment is reliable. Use the individual dress chart and compare its actual measurements with your needs.

Should I choose the smaller size because a dress stretches?

Not automatically. Check the lining, seams, fastenings and stated stretch as well as the outer fabric. Choose based on the whole garment.

Can a regional size converter tell me my exact fit?

No. It compares approximate labels. A fit decision still needs product-specific measurements and your preferences for room and coverage.

What if the chart is missing or unclear?

Ask for the units, measuring method and measurements for the size you are considering. Do not assume a photograph or a familiar size label answers those questions.
